More than 500 acres of primary and secondary rainforest between Quepos and Manuel Antonio, protected since 2012.
Costa Rica is the birthplace of zip lining: wildlife biologists used the first zip lines to move about the forest canopy above the jungle floor. Zip lining at El Santuario is not associated with work anymore! More than 500 acres of primary and secondary rainforest make up the property. Santuario is the Spanish word for “Sanctuary”. In 2012 the land was purchased and, with the help of a zip line engineer, a Costa Rican arborist and some very hard-working laborers, El Santuario Canopy Adventure was launched.
Our “Sanctuary” gives you a glimpse into the amazing biodiversity of the rainforest. Climb up a Lechoso tree, zip off the platform in the Chilamate among the orchids, and rappel down the side of the giant Ceiba tree. Butterflies and hummingbirds join you at the rancho at the beginning and end of your adventure. Family vacation, honeymoon or a big group? From 4-year-olds to 87-year-olds, let us share our piece of the rainforest with you.
Quepos was once the home of the Quepoa Indians, the fiercest warriors in Central America, and grew as a banana port. In the 1940s the banana plantations gave way to African palms, still harvested by hand today. On your way to El Santuario you will see the town, the palm plantations and sometimes the ox-drawn carts still used to gather the palm fruit.
Sometime between 900 and 950 AD the Quepoa made Manuel Antonio their winter home. Since 1972 Manuel Antonio National Park has been one of Costa Rica’s most visited attractions: beautiful beaches, hiking trails and abundant wildlife, with sloths, three types of monkeys and spectacular birds. Our canopy office is located at The Falls Resort at Manuel Antonio, owned by the same group as El Santuario and The Falls Garden Restaurant.
